Calling all Explorer Scouts working as Young Leaders in South & South East London Scouts....

Our Young Leader Scheme training weekend is here!

Who can go?

All young people across our County who are between the ages of 14 and 18* are are working with a section in a Scout Group as a Young Leader.

Young Leaders training is for young people aged 14 to 17 (up until the day before their 18th birthday). If  you are 18 or over at the time of the course you are not able to attend this training and need to book onto our adult learning programme.

What’s on offer?

All the Young Leader modules except module K: First Aid, (see our frequently asked questions below).

These are:

  • Module A - Prepare for take-off!
  • Module B - Taking the lead
  • Module C - That's the way to do it!
  • Module D - Understanding Behaviour
  • Module E - Game on!
  • Module F - Making Scouting accessible
  • Module G - Programme plans
  • Module H - Programme plans plus
  • Module I - What did they say?

What’s the idea of the modules?

They are designed to support your personal development as a young person who helps with a younger section and enable you as a Young Leader to work effectively in the section you choose. Remember this is a training course, and we try to deliver the majority of learning through activities, games and having fun in a relaxed, friendly way.

What do young leaders do?

Have we got to learn all weekend?

NO! We intend to have a combination of Scout Activities, Wide Games, Team Building Games, etc in between sessions.

How much does it cost?

The First Aid course and the weekend are FREE to all Young Leaders.

We have moved away from charging a deposit, replacing this system by charging any groups £25 directly if people withdraw or do not attend their allocated training and first aid courses.

This approach is required because Young Leaders have been known to say yes in the past and not turn up after we have organised accommodation, food, and activities and booked a First Aid training  which is quite a substantial sum beforehand and blocks others from signing up.

After the weekend is that it?

No! As well as your First Aid course (if you haven’t completed it before the weekend), you will need to complete four missions (projects) to put into practice what you have learnt. This will be explained on the training weekend.

How do I get a place on the course?

Application and parental consent are online

Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have my own tent - what should I do?

In the first instance, ask your Explorer Unit or Scout Group if you can borrow one. If for some reason your unit/group cannot lend you a tent then contact Paul.

I know someone else attending, can we share a tent?

If you friend is of the same gender, then of course this makes sense and you can do so.

I have additional needs what support can you  give me with the course?

As part of the weekend you will be divided into small groups, each group will be assigned a leader, who will help you throughout the weekend. Please make sure you tell us, we are here to help you enjoy the course.

I need to arrive late / pop out for part of the weekend / leave early - is that ok?

No, on the application form you committed to attend for the whole weekend. The course is busy with a lot to organise, it is therefore not possible for me to arrange custom schedules for people to ensure all of the materials are covered.

If you cannot commit to the whole weekend, I will move you to another course.

Why can’t I do Module K First Aid as well?

This is because it is a stand-alone course that lasts a day. You will gain the Emergency First Aid at work qualification, the same as an adult leader. We are running two courses, and the places are allocated on a first come first served basis, you will get to indicate your preference when you sign up so, you can attend the the date that suits you. If you already hold this certificate, you will not have to complete the First Aid course again.
